Miracle baby heading home

Nelson mum Vicki Frost with her baby boy Jack, who was born four months premature. Photo: Andrew Board.

Andrew Board Baby Jack Frost is on track to go home this week, four months after he was born but just days before his original due date, December 21. Jack’s mum, Vicki Frost, went into labour at just 23 weeks and she was told by doctors at Nelson Hospital that they wouldn’t try to save her baby, he was just too young. But four harrowing months on Jack is healthy, happy and ready to go home for the first time. The incredible journey that Jack, along with Vicki and her husband Marty, have been on has not only touched their friends and family, but the 3000 Facebook followers that Vicki’s page has attracted. She says writing the daily updates of Jack’s battle has

Mums drive drunk with kids

Drunk mums driving with children, or to pick up children, have shocked Nelson police over the past week. Ten drivers were caught over the drink driving limit over the weekend during a police operation, but worryingly, three of the highest levels of intoxication came from mums, says Inspector Jenni Richardson. “Our highest reading came from a pregwheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

nant woman with passengers in her car and the third highest reading was a woman with a young baby in the back seat. You have to wonder how long it is until an innocent life is lost.” A third woman recorded a breath alcohol reading of 440mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, while on her way to pick up a child. The limit is 250 and the pregnant woman registered 880 when tested by police.

Jenni says police were expecting to see an increase in the number of drivers testing in the 250-400 range after a recent law change dropped the legal limit from 400 to 250. “But what we’re seeing is breath alcohol readings in the 800s and 900s, which is outrageous,” she says. Just three weeks ago police publicly said in Nelson Weekly that they would come down hard on drunk drivers this holiday period,

but the message seems to have gone unnoticed, says Jenni. “It’s shocking, given the amount of publicity we have given to drink driving in recent weeks, combined with the fact we’ve made no secret that we will be out checking drivers.” She says there would be an increased police presence on the roads in the lead up to Christmas and through the holiday period, with more checkpoints planned this week.

“I’ve finished, it was easy because I’m going to Australia for Christmas Day so that’s why I’ve had to get everything done early.”

“Haven’t started, we haven’t got that much to do. We started a month ago getting bits and pieces but the real Christmas shopping hasn’t started.”

“I’ve finished, because my family all live in Palmerston North and they were down here with a car so I bought all my presents so they could take them back.”

“Part way through, I think this Christmas I want to do a lot less than previous ones.”

Miracle baby, Jack Frost, heading home FROM PAGE 1 “kept me sane”. The story starts around three years ago when Vicki – a local school teacher in her mid-30s – was told she was going through menopause and the chances of her getting pregnant were around 2 to 5 per cent. A week after she found out she was pregnant, in March this year, Vicki started bleeding heavily. She went in for a scan and her uterus was full of blood. Doctors told her that she probably wouldn’t be able to carry the baby. She says those weeks were “horrible” she was constantly sick but

the bleeding slowed and by week 13 the doctors said she was back on track. “But I felt that it wasn’t,” she says. “I felt things weren’t going well at all.” At 21 weeks, while at a school sports tournament, Vicki’s waters broke, so she was rushed to hospital. The very next day she got the flu and was in isolation for ten days at Nelson Hospital. There she was repeatedly told that the baby wouldn’t survive if she gave birth before it had reached 24 weeks. “So it was pretty awful, I was so sick and trying to deal with this. We didn’t think we’d have a live baby then because it was another two or three weeks

Jack Frost just a few days old in Wellington Hospital. before we got to the 24 week mark.” At exactly 23 weeks Vicki went into labour and they prepared to say goodbye to their baby. Then a call was made to Wellington Hospital specialists and they were prepared to take the Frosts – if they wanted to go. “So it was completely surreal how everything changed. We Open until 3pm Saturdays really, really didn’t want a baby that had to fight for 277 High St, Motueka the first few months or years of his life, because it’s not fair on the baby. much as we desperately wanted a baby, we didn’t want it at the expense of a baby having a miserable life.” They decided to give it a go and Vicki was given drugs to suppress the labour. Two days later, on August 26, she gave birth to Jack, all 712 grams of him. Jack was rushed away with the doctors and his father, who was on hand to make a decision of whether to stop trying to save him if he was struggling too much. Vicki says even then she felt there was very little chance of Jack surviving. But he kept fighting and fighting. Even after five weeks of everything going well, Vicki says nurses were still telling her not to get her hopes up. “I cried a lot, I spent a lot of time in tears. It was my only chance to have a baby and I really wanted to do what I could, but not at the expense of a

miserable life.” Jack has had plenty of obstacles to overcome, including complications with his stomach, eyes, veins and lungs. But he’s come through them all and the prognosis for a normal, healthy life is excellent. Vicki says through the whole ordeal, her blog on her Facebook page has been a surprising source of strength. “The funny thing is I’m not big on Facebook and definitely not a public person, but we were getting so many text messages I decided to make a page with updates to keep people informed without having to constantly send text messages. “It was really just to let friends and family know and it just took off. It was really bizarre.” Vicki is hoping this week to write her favourite post yet. A picture of her young family in their own home for the first time.

Nelson leads Christmas spending

Nelson shoppers are feeling the Christmas spirit, with the city again recording the highest increase in spending, this time for the first two weeks of December. Hospitality is leading the charge nationally, with growth of nine per cent, according to figures released yesterday by eftpos company Paymark. “This may reflect the annual Christmas celebrations being particularly buoy-

ant, but we’ve seen consistent growth in this sector throughout 2014. It may also be due to an increase in domestic and international tourism in places such as Nelson and Otago where growth is strong,” says Paymark’s Paul Whiston. Overall Nelson recorded growth of 7.7 per cent, well above the national average of just 4.3 per cent. In total, $46.5 million was spent through the Paymark network in the first two

weeks of December. Uniquely Nelson manager, Cathy Madigan, says the figures are great news for the city. “It’s just building on the strong start through November. Certainly, retail spend has kicked in and people are getting out there. Obviously hospitality and accommodation is helping to prop that up too. I think next week is going to be a bumper week so retailers are all happy.”

Family boat restore Simon Bloomberg

A launch that was built in Wellington in 1929 and has been in the same family for four, going on five, generations, has just been re-launched in Nelson after its latest refit. Judith Glue’s grandfather, Roy Harvey, and his brother-in-law, Sam Weine, started building the 35 foot kauri launch on a steep section behind Sam’s house in Kilbirnie in 1927. Veca was launched in 1929 and remained in Roy’s family for 58 of the next 85 years with Judith and her husband Pete, of Richmond, completing the latest refit in Nelson earlier this month. Pete says Veca, which was named after Roy and Sam’s wives, Vera and Caroline, has a fascinating history with her framing being constructed out of an “old man rata tree” Roy and Sam cut down in Akatarawa Forest, near Wellington. They also had to build a ramp over the top of Sam’s house to get Veca out of the section and down a steep road to Evans Bay where she was launched. “They had to use two old Wellington coal trucks to get her down the road,” Pete says. “It was so steep they put anchors into the road to stop

However, Judith’s father, Bruce Harvey, brought her back in 1968 when he saw her “tied to a mooring a forlorn state in Evans Bay” and she has stayed in the family ever since. “Roy spent most of his retirement restoring Veca for Bruce and then we acquired her as an inheritance. We pulled her out of the water again in 1985 and transported her to Bill Gibbons’ old shingle plant in Lower Queen St for her second refit. “We took out every screw in the hull and refastened and recaulked her, and fibreglassed the topside, and then we relaunched her on Christmas Eve in 1987. I remember that because the Ministry of Transport wouldn’t give us a permit to take an oversized load through town, but we went anyway. “It was a bit of a nightmare because the transporter got a flat tyre in the middle of Stoke. There was traffic everywhere and I said to the guys, ‘bugger the tyre, keep driving’.” The latest refit involved reconstructing the wheelhouse and Pete says he was a little concerned about the boat being out of the water for about five weeks.

txt us your view - 027 UR VOICE NEW CEO FOR AIRPORT: Nelson Airport has a new chief executive. Last month, longtime CEO Kaye McNabb announced she was retiring and the Board of Nelson Airport Limited yesterday announced Robert Evans as her replacement. Robert previously worked at Wellington Airport and North Queensland Airports. He says he’s excited about the new role. “I am excited by this opportunity and am very cognisant of how important aviation access is to isolated and regional economies. I

am very conscious of the accolades, and exceptional qualities that Nelson Airport provides for its patrons and stakeholders, and will look to build on that positive reputation.” WATER RESTRICTIONS: Due to the lack of significant rainfall and dropping water levels at the Maitai Dam, Nelson City Council has introducing stage one water restrictions in all urban areas. Stage one restrictions allow odd numbered houses to use sprinklers on odd days only

and vice versa for even numbered houses. The restrictions apply to the use of sprinklers on gardens, lawns and orchards, but do not at this stage apply to areas used extensively by the public, such as bowling greens, golf course greens, cricket pitches and public gardens. Facing a vote of no-confidence in his presidency of Nelson Grey Power, Neville Male says the “nasty character assassination” has shocked him. This Sunday, December 21, members of Nelson Grey Power will vote on whether to keep the former Sport Tasman boss on, or turf him out. Students’ parting gift

Nayland College art students Milena Baden, Holly Maitland and Maddy Hanson will be leaving the school with a colourful parting gift as they head off to university next year. A mural at the front of the school that Milena had always admired was the inspiration behind creating their own piece, to showcase the talents of the Nayland College art department, and give back to their school after five memorable years. The mural is also a celebration of all three girls being accepted into the Ilam School of Arts in Canterbury, an achievement they are extremely excited about. The girls were required to take at least two art subjects Maddy Hanson, Holly Maitland and Milena Baden, with part of this year and send away a portfolio of all their work. their unfinished mural that will soon be put up outside the Nayland The mural is expected to be finished in a few weeks College gym. TUESDAY 16 December 2014

Your Voice

Tahuna Modellers Pond: The Tahunanui boating pond has been a favourite place for the young, and not so young, of Nelson for many decades, [when it has been cleaned], to try out their Christmas or birthday presents or various marine models they have

built. I remember in the 1950s, as a member of the Tahunanui Scout Group, going down and cleaning the algae out, and as a school kid enjoyed many hours at this pond. The council will be doing the people of Nelson no favour if they do anything but concrete the pool's bottom. The minority of Nelson's population, who coerce the council into spending many tens of thousands of dollars on so-called artistic embellishments around the city, for example, a green humanfaced asparagus, some rusty iron and a walkway along the river, [which no soldiers would have walked along on their way to the port as it was mud flat]. No greater work of art can be than that of many happy children sailing their boats on a safe haven, the Tahunanui Modellers pond. David Potts.

I cried reading this yesterday. Sending my aroha to him and his family. I have no idea what they're going through, but I'm truly sorry to hear the updated information. Jannelle Patterson. What I find sucks about this situation is that so many families and people get given so much from the government and they don't even need or deserve it. This family, who really need help, have struggled the entire time to try and raise the funds themselves. My heart and prayers go out to Mike and his family. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand xoxo. Sarah-Hope Bailey. I too felt tears when I read this yesterday. Much love to you and your family xoxo. Kelly Watson. What sad news to hear. Sending love and prayers to you and your family. Verity Bartlett. Really sorry to hear this. I've donated to Mike's cause and a few other people fighting cancer, fundraising for life, extending treatment and in two others it's been too late, they've died soon after. I wish these stories became public

earlier so these poor people had more of a chance. Jasmin Price. So sad to hear, thinking and praying for you and family xo. Eniko Fekete. Such an evocative photo of Mike & his wife, capturing the aching totality of their situation - the enduring bravery, the love, and the shadow which has come between them. May their family feel peace and love during the last of their time together. You are a community paper in the truest sense, Nelson Weekly; Mike's gratitude for how you helped rally us all is such a wonderful testament to that. Melissa Short. Butcher robbed: Poor chap really has been hit with the s*#t stick!! As for the robbers, I do hope they get severe diarrhoea from their Christmas dinners!! And then contract the clap!! Janelle Thorpe. Look at Trade Me that might flush them out. Nelson might be attracting a lot of people who want to live there, but it is also attracting a criminal element. The crime rate has certainly increased over the last three or four years. Brenda Kenny. To have your say on any local issue, email editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Nelson man wins top arborist award

Nelson arborist Brad Cadwallader has won the country’s top arboriculture award. The Ron Flook Award is named after Nelson landscape architect Ron Flook and is the top award of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association. Brad, who owns Cadwallader Tree Consultancy, won the award at the New Zealand Arboricultural Association awards in Rotorua, last week. Carl Rogers, chairman of the New Zealand Notable Trees Trust, says the award is to recognise high standards of practice, including tree raising, tree health and management, and amenity tree protection or design. “Brad continues to be a strong advocate for trees. He has hosted many educational workshops around the country promoting good tree management practices and is a regular speaker at various green industry conferences and seminars.” Brad previously worked at Nelmac.

Red Cross volunteers recognised

Jessie Johnston

Compassion and dedication have never been absent from New Zealand Red Cross volunteers Mary Keddie and Pat Borlase. The ladies were amongst several that received awards for their services to the Red Cross organisation at their annual gathering, last Thursday. Branches from across Nelson and Tasman region came together to celebrate the end of the year and recognise the contributions made by volunteers, ranging from five years of service all the way up to 70 years. “Nobody expects the recognition, but from the Red Cross’s perspective, it’s nice for them to be recognised, they don’t do it for that reason, they do it because they enjoy doing it and because they care,” says Red Cross’s service centre coordinator, Jackie Tye While 23 volunteers received long service awards, Mary Keddie and Pat Borlase were also acknowledged with Honorary Life Membership Awards, given to those who have played a particular role in the Red Cross over an extended period of time and made a valuable contribution to the organisation. Pat became part of Red Cross officially in 1989. Back in the sixties, she had been involved with sewing for Red

Sergeant Edward John Baigent was born on 31 July, 1893, to Charlotte White Baigent and Joseph Baigent, Wakefield, Nelson, New Zealand. Baigent, a farmer from Wakefield, Nelson, joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion as a Private during World War One. He embarked from Wellington on 16 October, 1914, and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. Baigent survived the war and was discharged on 12 December, 1918. He died on 6 September, 1973, in Opotiki. EJ Baigent is one of the featured servicemen in the WW1 exhibition at Nelson Provincial Museum.

The sound of trumpets and horns heralded the festive season when the Nelson City Brass Band spread their annual Christmas cheer around the streets of Nelson last week. Former president of the band, Pat Heaphy, emptied the shingle from his farm truck and drove around the streets, while 13 members of the band sat in the back and played Christmas carols.

A bid to get more girls playing cricket in Nelson is off to a promising start, with more than 40 taking part in a new competition. Nelson Cricket Association eventually hopes to get up to 200 girls, aged 6-13, turning up on Thursday evenings at Greenmeadows during the summer to play and be coached, as it seeks to build on a renewed interest in the game among local women. The free initiative is being partly funded by a $3064 KiwiSport grant from Sport Tasman, with Nelson Cricket picking up the other half of the cost. Nelson Cricket community cricket coordinator, Jon Routhan, says the girls play a modified game called Quikhit. Players are divided evenly into teams and bat in pairs for three overs, losing three runs every time they get out. There is also a 10 metre exclusion zone around the pitch where fielders are not allowed until a batswoman hits the ball. This teaches the girls about running between the wickets and

Those waiting to bat or play receive coaching, as the aim is to teach them about the game as well as having fun. Jon says the competition, which started last month, has received a great response. "The girls love their cricket and play hard every time, and parents are stoked to have cricket readily available for their girls.’’ Jon says he is confident numbers will grow and that the competition will become an annual

event. "We are going into schools during lunch hours and running games and coaching sessions, which is proving very successful in getting new players involved.’’ Some who had never picked up a cricket bat before had excellent hand-eye coordination, while their teachers are keen for them to give something new a go, he says. The aim is to upskill girls so more could play Saturday club cricket and go onto higher honours.

SportS Thank you! A very special thanks to local businesses, individuals and community organisations who supported St John in 2014. As a charity we rely on the generosity of our community to ensure we can provide our vital services. • St John’s paid and volunteer ambulance staff provide emergency and non-emergency care, patient transfers, events medical services and air support. • Our volunteers ensure the Health Shuttle, Caring Caller and Friends of the Emergency Department services are available for those who need extra support. • St John provides valuable youth and schools programmes, first aid training, first aid kits, defibrillators and medical alarms to enhance the health and wellbeing of people of all ages. Your support truly does make a difference to the patients we care for, the people we assist and the staff and volunteers who provide the services in the Nelson Area. Donations, grants, sponsorship and bequests received in 2014 have directly supported these services. We have purchased a wide range of new equipment for our local ambulance fleet and comfortable furniture for Nelson and Richmond ambulance stations and provided support to our 120 volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our dedicated volunteers who freely give their time to support their community. We wish you a safe and happy Festive Season.

Nelson, Christmas and berries are a match made in heaven, so a trip to Tasman Bay Berries should be top priority this summer. The Tasman Bay Berry Company is a family business, passionate about sharing the delights of summer with the public. Their shop on McShane Rd has expanded even further since last year and owners Maree and Glen Holland are getting ready for the busy holiday period, introducing some new solutions to keep queuing to a minimum. Designated stalls catering to customers wishing to pick their own or pick up online orders will mean the shop is freed up to deal with those purchasing ice creams or fresh, pre-packaged berries, and their car park attendant will help direct traffic so everyone can come in and enjoy what Tasman Bay Berries has to offer. The expansion of the business has also led to a new animal enclosure behind the pack house. Children will love Muz and Cuz, the piglets, Lily and Lola the lambs and

their family of goats. Maree says the idea of Tasman Bay Berries is to be a destination for families who can come out and experience the country atmosphere of picking their own berries, relaxing at a picnic table under the shade sails with a real fruit ice cream, and seeing and feeding the animals. Tasman Bay Berries offers a casual and rustic feel, perfect for a morning or afternoon of collecting your own black raspberries, raspberries or boysenberries. Strawberries are also available from the shop, along with frozen berries, ice creams and 100 per cent natural, homemade jams, created with Tasman Bay Berries quality fruit. With the shop staying open until the end of January, make the most of Tasman Bay Berries. Either call in and see them on 37 McShane Rd, they’re open every day from 9am until 5:30pm, or visit their website at www.tasmanbayberries.co.nz to preorder your berries. Business Update. Adv.

All Fight 4 Victory bouts confirmed The final two fights for next year's Fight 4 Victory have been confirmed. All ten bouts have now been announced and the latest will see two engineers square up against each other, while Stonewood Homes co-owner Rhys Horncastle will battle Paul Hammett, brother of former All Black Mark Hammett. Engineer Karl Griffith, of Talley's, will fight Anchor Engineering owner Heath Botica. All four men say they've never boxed before but Paul admitted to a few fights "without gloves". Victory Boxing Charitable Trust programme director, Paul Hampton, says he's delighted with the card. "We're really excited to get all ten fights, it's been a long process but now we can start training and really get into it." The card now has lawyers, chefs, hairdressers, a police officer, an army officer, engineers, a city councillor, a newspaper editor and business owners. Paul says the range of people who have put their names forward has been a real highlight. "We're really happy with the names that have come forward and with the range of backgrounds, and all of them are there to support the programme." Corporate tables for the event on April 4 are sold out and general admission tickets will go on sale in late January.
